Maintenance pointers to be aware of.

Beware that clapping (applauding) with rings on both hands damages all kinds of rings.

When you see hundreds of little dings on the band and can’t understand what happened, now you know.

This is what we call repacking the hinge when possible.
This is half the cost of a new hinge
This only works when there is only a slight looseness in a narrow hinge.

By driving a punch into the rivet this squashes it inside making it swell, thus tightening up the slack created by the wear on the center of the hinge. This does not work on wider hinges as the rivet is longer, and would just bend instead of swelling up inside.

"Restoration"

8 year old Ringlock
abused and still locking.

A drop of oil in the joints will prolong the life of the system.
After swelling up the rivet the outside is welded to close up the marks.

Here are the results of no oil.
These rivets were replaced to restore the action of the clasp.
Without oil, parts will wear out faster.

When the hinge is very worn like this where the hole in the center part of the hinge has become too large the rivet has to be punched out and the hole has to be welded and reopened to tight tolerance.
This is how all the parts have to be disassembled to be serviced.

This ring was over 10 years old to be worn out like this, even the latch was broken.

This is the hole welded and ready to open to correct size and then the hinge reassembled and the outside of the hinge is welded up again to seal the rivets for complete restoration.

Once serviced it is restored.
When complete the hinge is tight and is good for several years again.

The clasp must start out as tight as possible (as everything in life wears) the tighter you start out the longer service will be delayed, as it will take longer to become worn wobbly.

The PFF is the only clasp that will remain locked even in a worn wobbly state. The unique design of the latch is what makes this possible.

If by chance you put your ring into dish detergent, you should re-oil the joints.
A tiny drop of any oil will do. 3-in-one oil or sewing machine oil is good.
Dip a tooth pick in oil to get the right amount.
Just wipe the excess with a tissue.

At least once a year, clean your ring with Windex (contains ammonia) and oil the joints.
